Evaluating Damask Rose Essential Oil: Why GC–MS Alone Is Not Enough

A rose essential oil can meet a written specification and still leave a perfumer asking a different question: will this material create the rose character our formula needs? For a purchasing team, the corresponding question is whether a new batch will perform consistently enough for the intended product.

GC–MS is an essential part of that assessment. It provides evidence about chemical composition. A complete evaluation also considers the sample’s aroma under comparable conditions and its performance in the intended formulation. This article brings those perspectives together for professional buyers, quality teams and fragrance developers working with Damask rose essential oil, also known as rose otto.



What a chromatographic report tells you

Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry separates compounds and records their mass spectra, helping analysts identify constituents in a sample. A rose oil report may list familiar components such as citronellol, geraniol and nerol, together with other detected constituents. Read the report as a description produced by a particular analytical method.

Before comparing percentages, check the detector, sampling method and reporting basis. An area percentage is not automatically a calibrated mass percentage. Research on GC–FID response factors illustrates why quantification needs more care than simply treating every detector response as equivalent. [1]

A useful question for the laboratory is: “Are these relative peak areas or quantified concentrations, and were both samples analysed using the same method?” This keeps a purchasing comparison anchored to comparable information.



Why composition and perceived aroma need to be considered together

A component’s abundance and its sensory contribution are different measurements. Gas chromatography–olfactometry, or GC–O, adds an olfactory assessment of compounds as they leave the chromatographic column. It helps researchers connect analytical signals with perceived odours.

Xiao and colleagues at Shanghai Institute of Technology combined chemical analysis with olfactometry and descriptive sensory evaluation when comparing five rose essential-oil samples. [2] In a related study, aroma recombination provided an additional check on the sensory relevance of selected rose-oil odorants. [3]

Japanese work by Ohashi and colleagues offers another perspective: trace odorants affected the character of a recreated Damask rose flower aroma. [4] That experiment concerned flower aroma, and its results should not be treated as the composition of every distilled rose oil.

Our practical conclusion is to use the chromatogram and the smelling record together. A short list of major constituents cannot answer every question about floral character, balance or suitability for a particular fragrance brief. Equally, an attractive first impression on a blotter should not replace identity and quality documentation.



Start with the right material: rose species and extraction matter

The commercial term “rose oil” needs a precise botanical identity. A 2023 study of industrial rose oils produced in China reported distinct profiles for Damask, Kushui and Rosa rugosa materials. [5] These findings support careful identification; they do not establish a universal ranking of origins.

The same discipline applies to extraction. Rose essential oil, rose absolute, rose concrete and rose hydrosol are different ingredient formats. Comparing them as interchangeable samples can make both analytical and sensory conclusions misleading.

Distilled oil: compare its documented identity, chromatographic profile, aroma and performance in the intended base.

Rose absolute

Aromatic extract: assess its own specification, sensory character, solubility and applicable residual-solvent documentation.

Rose concrete

Waxy aromatic concentrate: consider physical handling and the role of its wax-containing matrix in the intended process.

Rose water / hydrosol

Aqueous distillate: evaluate aroma alongside the relevant microbiological and physical quality information.

Sampling also needs context. Hupp’s 2025 study used calibrated GC–MS approaches and different sampling formats to examine selected rose-associated alcohols. [6] The buyer’s takeaway is straightforward: establish how the sample was measured before comparing the numbers.

A practical workflow for comparing rose oil samples

The following is our recommended framework for an industrial evaluation. Adapt it to your laboratory procedures and the intended application; it is not a batch acceptance standard derived from the cited papers.


1. Define the decision before opening the samples

Record whether the task is to approve a new supplier, compare harvest batches, replace an existing ingredient or develop a new rose accord. Write down the target character and the properties that matter in your formula. A sample suitable for one brief may be less suitable for another.


2. Build a comparable sample set

Assign neutral sample codes and include an agreed reference where available. Record the batch, receipt date and storage history. Use the same suitable diluent, concentration, blotter type and evaluation conditions for a like-for-like comparison. Follow the applicable SDS and your laboratory’s handling procedure.


3. Record the aroma over agreed intervals

Use shared vocabulary to describe floral, fresh, green, spicy, waxy or other impressions that are actually observed. Record intensity separately from character and note any unexpected odour. Evaluate all samples at the same planned intervals. This produces a more useful discussion than a single “stronger” or “weaker” judgement.


4. Compare the analysis with the sensory observations

When two samples differ, review the full available profile and method with the supplier or laboratory. Ask which observations need further investigation rather than assigning the difference to one compound without evidence. Additional targeted analysis should answer a defined question.


5. Confirm performance in the intended formulation

Trial the shortlisted sample in the actual base using your established development procedure. Record the addition level, preparation method, appearance and aroma against the reference. Apply the stability and compatibility checks relevant to your product. Keep the decision and its supporting documents linked to the evaluated batch.
